Venice
You can be here in October for about €1,007, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 19°C days, fares below average.
Winter outside Carnival is when the city belongs to itself: fog, empty campi, and acqua alta now mostly held back by the MOSE barriers. Summer brings heat, mosquitoes and queues; the Biennale, alternating art and architecture, runs from spring to late autumn and is a reason in itself.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Venice is a city of some fifty thousand residents receiving many millions of visitors on the same hundred-odd islands, and how it feels depends almost entirely on when and where you are standing. It suits people who walk early, get lost on purpose and leave San Marco to the crowds; it punishes anyone who only sees the Rialto-to-San-Marco corridor.
What you can do
- 01Walk from the station to San Marco through Cannaregio and Castello rather than the signed route, and get lost.
- 02See Tintoretto at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Bellini at the Frari, next door to each other.
- 03Ride vaporetto line 1 the length of the Grand Canal at dusk, standing at the front or the back.
- 04Eat cicchetti with an ombra of wine in the bacari around the Rialto market and along Fondamenta degli Ormesini.
- 05Take the boat to Torcello for the Byzantine cathedral's mosaics, stopping at Burano's painted houses on the way.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Cannaregio, Dorsoduro or eastern Castello for a first visit and walk everywhere; Mestre is convenient for trains but a different holiday.
Unusual things
- ◦San Michele, the cemetery island between Venice and Murano, with the graves of Stravinsky, Diaghilev and Brodsky.
- ◦The Querini Stampalia, a palazzo library with a Carlo Scarpa garden and a ground floor designed to flood.
- ◦Sant'Erasmo, the lagoon's market-garden island, cycled or walked in an afternoon among artichoke fields.

Good to know
Acqua alta can flood low areas between October and January, and on peak days the city requires day visitors to book access in advance; check the tide forecast and the Comune's calendar.
