The dry northeast monsoon from about December to April gives the flattest seas and best visibility; the wet season brings cheaper rooms, afternoon squalls and, for divers, the manta and whale shark plankton bloom on the western sides of the atolls. Ramadan changes opening hours on local islands.
Best months here: February, March, October. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. The place
The Maldives is not one place but twenty-six atolls of tiny islands, and the trip you get depends entirely on which island you pick: a private resort that owns its whole island, or a guesthouse on a local island with a bikini beach and no alcohol. The water is the point, and it is as clear as the photographs; the culture, Muslim and low-key, is mostly on the islands tourists skip.
What you can do
- 01Snorkel the house reef straight off the beach before breakfast, when the light is low and the reef fish are out.
- 02Dive or snorkel with manta rays at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll during the season, guided and with numbers controlled.
- 03Take a public ferry between local islands to see how the country actually lives: mosques, joali chairs, fish drying.
- 04Walk Malé in an afternoon: the fish market, the seventeenth-century Hukuru Miskiy coral mosque, the Republic Square.
- 05Eat mas huni, tuna with coconut and chilli, with roshi for breakfast, and garudhiya fish broth for lunch.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Choose the island before the hotel: a resort if you want your own beach and a bar, a guesthouse island if you want to spend less and see something of the country. Anything more than a speedboat away from Malé means a seaplane or domestic flight, so match the transfer to your arrival time.

- ◦Fuvahmulah, a single-island atoll in the far south with a freshwater lake and tiger sharks that draw serious divers.
- ◦Utheemu on Haa Alifu Atoll, the wooden palace of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who drove out the Portuguese in the sixteenth century.
- ◦Addu Atoll's old RAF base at Gan, with a causeway road linking islands you can cycle across, rare in the Maldives.
