Why now

Shoulder season in October: 13°C days, 14 rainy days, fares below average.

Early summer brings long evenings and the West End's street festivals, but also midges in the Highlands from late spring to early autumn; the folk festival Celtic Connections fills the city in the depth of winter, when Highland hotels and boat services are mostly shut. Old Firm match days change the mood of the city centre.

Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Glasgow is a Victorian sandstone city built on shipbuilding and tobacco money that now runs on music venues, art schools and a fast, dry wit; it is louder and friendlier than Edinburgh and better-looking than its reputation. The Highlands begin an hour north, which is the real reason to base here: Loch Lomond by suburban train, Glencoe by the morning bus, the west coast by one of the finest railway lines in Europe.

What you can do

  1. 01See the Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park, reopened after a long refit; ten minutes by train from Central to Pollokshaws West.
  2. 02Spend an afternoon at Kelvingrove Art Gallery, then walk up through the university's Gothic quadrangles to the Hunterian's Mackintosh House.
  3. 03Eat along Argyle Street in Finnieston, the strip where most of the city's newer restaurants and bars have opened.
  4. 04Ride the West Highland Line from Queen Street to Fort William or on to Mallaig; the Rannoch Moor stretch is the point.
  5. 05Climb through the Necropolis behind Glasgow Cathedral for the view over the Tennent's brewery and the East End.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

West EndByres Road, Ashton Lane, the university and Kelvingrove Park; leafy tenement streets, the natural first-visit base, two subway stops from the centre.
FinniestonFormer docklands between the West End and the Clyde; the city's restaurant strip, the Hydro arena, walkable to Kelvingrove.
Merchant CityWarehouses and grid streets east of George Square turned into bars and flats; central, lively at weekends, noisy late.
ObanThe Highland base for ferries to Mull and Iona, three hours by train; a harbour town with a distillery and seafood shacks on the pier.

Stay in the West End around Hillhead or Kelvinbridge for a first visit, Finnieston if dinner matters most; the centre around Sauchiehall Street is convenient but rough at closing time. In the Highlands, book Fort William and Oban well ahead in summer.

Unusual things

  • ◦Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre in Trongate 103, mechanical sculptures of scrap and carved figures performing to music in a darkened room.
  • ◦The Britannia Panopticon on Trongate, the oldest surviving music hall in Britain, kept alive by volunteers with screenings and variety nights.
  • ◦The Govan Stones in Govan Old Church, a set of Viking-age carved stones and hogback tombs a subway ride across the river.

Day trips

Loch LomondTrain from Queen Street to Balloch, about 45 minutes, twice an hour — The southern shore is busy; take a boat or the bus to Balmaha and walk up Conic Hill for the view along the loch.
GlencoeCitylink bus from Buchanan Street, about two and a half hours — Walkers head for the Lost Valley; drivers stop at the Three Sisters lay-by and leave, which misses the point.
StirlingTrain, 30 minutes, several an hour — Castle on a crag, the Wallace Monument and the Bannockburn site; a smaller, calmer version of Edinburgh's old town.

Getting around
The Subway's single circular line links the centre and the West End every few minutes, buses cover the rest, and Central and Queen Street stations serve different directions. The airport bus 500 takes about 15 minutes; a car helps in the Highlands, though the trains to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig are part of the trip.
