Why now

Good time in October: 29°C days, 25 rainy days, sea 27°C, fares below average.

The dry season brings the harmattan haze and the calendar of festivals and homecoming events that fill hotels and restaurants; the rainy months are quieter and cheaper but flooding closes streets. Sunday mornings the city stops for church.

Best months here: January, February, November. October is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Accra is a hot, sprawling coastal capital that runs on traffic, church, highlife and a Friday-night energy the rest of West Africa envies. It suits people who like cities that are lived in rather than curated, and who can handle distances that make a simple crosstown errand a morning.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk Jamestown from the lighthouse to the fishing beach, ideally with a local guide from the neighbourhood.
  2. 02Eat waakye from a street stall for breakfast and banku with grilled tilapia at Osu at night.
  3. 03See the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre in the same afternoon.
  4. 04Spend a Friday night on Oxford Street in Osu, then a rooftop bar in Labone or Airport Residential.
  5. 05Buy fabric and beads at Makola Market in the morning before the heat and the crowds peak.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

OsuOxford Street bars, restaurants and Osu Castle; central and loud, the default first-visit base.
Labone and CantonmentsLeafy, embassies, cafés and galleries; calm, taxis needed, good mid-range guesthouses.
JamestownThe colonial and Ga heart of the city, fishing harbour and Chale Wote street art; visit, few stay.
East LegonNewer money, malls and restaurants, far from the coast; convenient for the airport, little else.

Osu or Labone for a first visit; East Legon only if you have airport reasons, and avoid anywhere that requires crossing the city at rush hour to reach dinner.

Unusual things

  • ◦The coffin workshops of Teshie, where carpenters build fantasy coffins shaped as fish, cocoa pods and aeroplanes.
  • ◦Nubuke Foundation in East Legon, a contemporary art space with residencies and a garden.
  • ◦Bojo Beach, a sandbar reached by canoe across a lagoon west of town, cleaner than the city beaches.

Day trips

Cape Coast and Elmina castlesCar or bus, 3 hours each way — The slave forts are the reason many people come to Ghana; better with a night in Cape Coast.
Aburi Botanical GardensCar or tro-tro, about 1 hour — Cooler air in the Akuapem hills, colonial-era gardens, wood-carving stalls on the road.
Shai Hills ReserveCar, about 1 hour — Baboons, antelope and bat caves in a small savannah reserve; go early.

Getting around
Ride-hailing apps are the practical option and cheap; tro-tros work if you know the routes. Traffic is severe from late afternoon, and Kotoka airport is close to the centre but slow to reach at peak hours.

Good to know

Petty theft and card-skimming are the main risks; ocean beaches in town have strong rips and are not clean enough for swimming.
