Houston
You can be here in March for about €882, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in March: 24°C days, 15 rainy days.
Late autumn through early spring is when the humidity lifts and outdoor life resumes; midsummer is heavy and storm-prone. The livestock show and rodeo takes over the city for three weeks in late winter, filling hotels and changing traffic patterns around NRG Park.
Best months here: February, October, November. March is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Houston has no zoning, no obvious centre and no interest in charming anyone, which turns out to be the point: the city is a flat sprawl of bayous and freeways containing world-class museums, a hundred immigrant food scenes and almost no tourists. It is one of the most diverse cities in the country and eats accordingly. Give it a car and low expectations and it repays both.
What you can do
- 01Spend an afternoon at the Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel next door; both are free and deliberately quiet.
- 02Eat Viet-Cajun crawfish or banh mi along Bellaire Boulevard in Asiatown, twenty minutes southwest of downtown.
- 03Book the Space Center Houston tram to the restored Apollo-era Mission Control at Johnson Space Center.
- 04Walk or cycle Buffalo Bayou Park from Sabine Street, the one long green corridor through the middle of town.
- 05Give the Museum of Fine Arts half a day, then cross Hermann Park to the natural science museum.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Montrose or the Museum District for a first visit; downtown works for business but empties at weekends, and the airport hotel strips leave you an hour from anything worth seeing.
Unusual things
- ◦The Orange Show Monument in the East End, a backyard maze of tiles, tractor seats and wrought iron built by a postman.
- ◦The Cistern under Buffalo Bayou Park, a 1926 drinking water reservoir of concrete columns opened for timed tours.
- ◦Waugh Bridge at dusk, when a colony of Mexican free-tailed bats pours out from under the roadway.

Good to know
Hurricane season runs from early summer to late autumn, and Houston floods: bayous rise fast, underpasses fill, and the aftermath of a storm disrupts flights for days. Watch forecasts before travelling and never drive into standing water.
