Frankfurt
You can be here in June for about €1,365, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in June: 25°C days.
Trade fairs, above all the book fair in autumn and the motor and consumer shows, empty the hotel market for a week at a time; check the Messe calendar before booking. Late spring and early autumn are the pleasant months for the riverbanks, and the Museumsuferfest in late summer closes the embankments to traffic.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Frankfurt is Germany's banking city and its main airport, a skyline of towers over a small rebuilt old town, and most people only see it from a transit lounge. It has more than it is credited with: a river lined with museums, a cider tradition in Sachsenhausen, and a serious opera and concert programme. It suits people passing through with a spare day and a preference for museums over monuments.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Museumsufer along the south bank, the Städel for Botticelli to Beckmann, then the Liebieghaus sculpture.
- 02Drink Apfelwein from a ribbed glass in a Sachsenhausen tavern, with handkäse and green sauce.
- 03Take the lift up the Main Tower for the only public skyscraper view.
- 04See the Römerberg's reconstructed Altstadt, then the Kaiserdom and the Schirn gallery.
- 05Cross the Eiserner Steg footbridge at dusk and walk the north bank to the Westhafen.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Sachsenhausen, Bornheim or the Westend; the Bahnhofsviertel is cheap and close to everything but not for everyone.
Unusual things
- ◦The Senckenberg natural history museum's dinosaur hall, one of the largest in Europe, in the Westend.
- ◦The Goethe-Haus, the writer's birthplace rebuilt after the war, with the Romantic Museum next door.
- ◦The Kleinmarkthalle, a working covered market with a sausage stand and a wine bar upstairs.
