Cancún
You can be here in August for about €1,077, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in August: 32°C days, 25 rainy days, sea 29°C, peak fares.
The dry season from about December to April has the calmest sea and the fullest hotels, with spring break and Easter the peaks in general terms; hurricane season runs June to November, and sargassum seaweed piles on the east-facing beaches through late spring and summer, varying week by week. Chichén Itzá on the equinoxes draws crowds that make the site unpleasant.
Best months here: February, March, April. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Cancún is a purpose-built resort strip on a sandbar, and the Yucatán behind it is the reason to fly there: Maya cities in the scrub, cenotes to swim in, colonial Mérida and Valladolid, and a Caribbean coast that gets quieter the further south you go. It suits people who use the airport and the beach as a base for a car and a loop; the Hotel Zone itself is the least Mexican place in Mexico.
What you can do
- 01Reach Chichén Itzá at opening, before the coaches from the coast, then swim in Cenote Ik Kil or the quieter Yokdzonot.
- 02Climb the pyramids at Cobá, still permitted in parts, then Tulum's walled city on its cliff early in the day.
- 03Spend two nights in Mérida for the Paseo de Montejo, cochinita pibil and the Sunday market on the plaza.
- 04Swim in cenotes near Valladolid, Dzitnup and Suytun, and walk the town's Calzada de los Frailes at dusk.
- 05Take the ferry to Isla Mujeres or Holbox for a slower version of the same sea, without the towers.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Use Cancún for a night either side of the flight, then base yourself in Valladolid or Mérida for the sites and Tulum, Holbox or Isla Mujeres for the sea; the Hotel Zone is for people who want nothing but the beach.
Unusual things
- ◦Ek Balam north of Valladolid, a Maya city with restored stucco figures on its acropolis and far fewer visitors than Chichén Itzá.
- ◦The Ruta Puuc south of Mérida: Uxmal, Kabah and Labná's ornate façades, a full day's loop by car.
- ◦Río Lagartos on the north coast, flamingos and mangroves by boat, with the pink salt lakes of Las Coloradas nearby.

Good to know
Hurricane season runs June to November, and sargassum can make the mainland beaches unpleasant from spring into summer; the Hotel Zone and tourist towns are generally safe while cartel-related violence affects parts of Quintana Roo away from visitors.
