Barcelona
You can be here in May for about €1,336, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in May: 21°C days, sea 18°C.
Spring and autumn are the seasons: the city is walkable, the sea is warm into October, and the big Gaudí sites still need booking weeks ahead. August is humid and many locals leave; the Mercè festival in early autumn and the Sant Joan bonfires at midsummer are the local highs.
Best months here: July, September, October. May is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Barcelona is a Mediterranean port city laid out on a grid, with Gaudí on the skyline, a medieval core, a beach it added for the Olympics and a resident population increasingly tired of visitors. It suits people who walk the Eixample, eat late and skip La Rambla; it is less relaxed than it looks, and pickpocketing is a craft here.
What you can do
- 01Book the Sagrada Família for a morning slot, then walk down Passeig de Sant Joan rather than back to the metro.
- 02See the Palau de la Música Catalana's interior on a guided visit and Santa Maria del Mar's bare Gothic nave.
- 03Eat at the Boqueria's bar counters before ten, or go to Santa Caterina and Sant Antoni markets instead, which are less overrun.
- 04Take the funicular and cable car up Montjuïc for the Fundació Miró and MNAC's Romanesque frescoes.
- 05Walk Gràcia's squares in the evening, then vermouth and tapas in a bodega on Carrer de Parlament in Sant Antoni.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Eixample, Gràcia or Poble-sec for a first visit; the Barri Gòtic and the streets off La Rambla are convenient and very loud at night.
Unusual things
- ◦The Hospital de Sant Pau, Domènech i Montaner's tiled modernista hospital pavilions, quieter than anything by Gaudí.
- ◦The Refugi 307 air-raid shelter in Poble-sec, tunnels dug by residents during the Civil War, visited by guided tour.
- ◦The Búnkers del Carmel, anti-aircraft platforms on the Turó de la Rovira with the whole city below; go for sunrise, not sunset.

Pickpockets work La Rambla, the metro and the beach with skill; carry nothing you would mind losing and keep phones off café tables.
