Skopje
You can be here in April for about €456, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in April: 19°C days.
Ohrid has a summer festival season and a long August of local holidaymakers, so late spring and September give warm-enough water and space on the promenade. Skopje is a year-round city stop; much of the bazaar shuts by early evening, which shapes a short visit.
Best months here: June, September, October. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Skopje rebuilt itself twice: after the 1963 earthquake on Kenzo Tange's concrete plan, and again in the 2010s under a government that clad the centre in plaster columns and bronze horsemen. Across the Stone Bridge, the Ottoman bazaar is the real thing. Ohrid, three hours south-west, is why many people come: a lake town of Byzantine churches on a shore that is calm out of season and full of Balkan holidaymakers in it.
What you can do
- 01Cross the Stone Bridge into the Old Bazaar for kebapčinja, tavče gravče and the Ottoman hans around Kapan An.
- 02Climb Kale fortress for the Vardar valley, then the Museum of Contemporary Art beside it, built from post-earthquake donations.
- 03Take bus 60 to Matka Canyon and a boat up the gorge to Vrelo cave; go on a weekday.
- 04Walk Ohrid's old town from the harbour up to St John at Kaneo, Plaošnik and Samuel's Fortress before the heat.
- 05Take the boat from Ohrid to St Naum and drift over the springs in a rowed boat.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
In Skopje stay in Debar Maalo for evenings or Centar for convenience; in Ohrid stay inside the old town, not in the hotel blocks along the shore road.
Unusual things
- ◦The Old Railway Station's clock, stopped at 5:17 by the 1963 earthquake; the surviving half of the building is now the City Museum.
- ◦Janko Konstantinov's Central Post Office by the river, a concrete flower of the Tange-era rebuild, scarred by a 2013 fire.
- ◦Vevčani, a village above Struga whose karst springs are walked on boardwalks and which declared itself a republic in the 1990s.

- Getting around
- Skopje's centre is walkable and taxis are cheap; the airport shuttle bus takes about 30 minutes and runs to flight times. Buses to Ohrid leave the main bus station several times a day and take about three hours; Ohrid airport has a few seasonal direct flights but no regular shuttle, so budget a taxi.
