Why now

Good time in July: 28°C days.

Spring and autumn are the times to eat and walk; summer is hot and many bouchons shut for August. The Fête des Lumières in early December fills the city for four nights, and the Nuits de Fourvière open-air season in summer stages concerts in the Roman theatres.

Best months here: June, August, September. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Lyon is a serious, well-fed city between two rivers, with a Renaissance old town, a silk-weavers' hill and a food culture that goes from the bouchons' tripe and pike quenelles to the Bocuse legacy. It is bourgeois in the best sense, walkable, and has less patience for tourists than Paris, which is part of its appeal. It suits people who plan meals first and sights second.

What you can do

  1. 01Eat lunch at a certified bouchon in the Presqu'île, sausage in brioche and a pot of Beaujolais; book.
  2. 02Walk through the traboules of Vieux Lyon and the Croix-Rousse, the covered passages once used by silk workers.
  3. 03Take the funicular to Fourvière for the basilica, the Roman theatres and the Gallo-Roman museum.
  4. 04Shop at Les Halles Paul Bocuse for cheese and quenelles, then picnic on the banks of the Rhône.
  5. 05Visit the Musée des Confluences, the glass-and-steel museum at the tip of the peninsula, by tram T1.
