Why now

Shoulder season in October: 13°C days, 16 rainy days, fares below average.

August is the Fringe and the International Festival, when the population doubles, rooms triple and the city is at its best and worst; book months ahead or come another time. May, June and September have long light and reasonable crowds, and Hogmanay at New Year is its own booked-solid event.

Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Edinburgh is two cities on a set of volcanic hills: the medieval Old Town stacked along a ridge from the castle, and the Georgian New Town laid out in a grid below it, with a dormant volcano in the middle of the park. It is compact, windy, handsome in any weather and used to visitors without being entirely resigned to them. It suits walkers, readers and people who do not mind a hill before breakfast.

What you can do

  1. 01Climb Arthur's Seat from Holyrood in the morning, an hour up, and see the whole city from the top.
  2. 02Walk the Royal Mile's closes, then the National Museum of Scotland, free, with a roof terrace.
  3. 03Take the Water of Leith walkway from Dean Village to Stockbridge and the Botanic Garden.
  4. 04Eat fish in Leith on the Shore, or a pie and a pint in a Rose Street pub.
  5. 05See the Scottish National Gallery's Raeburns and the Titians on the Mound, also free.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Old TownThe Royal Mile, the castle, closes and tourist pubs; atmospheric and crowded, noisy in August.
New TownGeorgian terraces, galleries, Princes Street gardens; the sober first-visit base.
StockbridgeA village within the city, a Sunday market, delis and bookshops; a 15-minute walk from Princes Street.
LeithThe port, with the Royal Yacht Britannia and the best restaurants; tram to the centre in 20 minutes.

Stay in the New Town or Stockbridge for a first visit, Leith for restaurants; the Old Town is for walking through, and the Grassmarket is loud until late.
