Crete
You can be here in October for about €458, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 26°C days, dry, sea 24°C, fares below average.
May, June and late September to October are the months: the Samaria gorge is open, the Chania and Rethymno old towns are full but not solid, and the sea is warm from June. In August the north-coast beaches and the gorge trail are crowded and the meltemi wind blows hard; most mountain trails close in winter.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Crete is closer to a small country than an island: 260 km long, a mountain spine over 2,000 m, Venetian harbours on the north coast and villages in the south where the only sound is goat bells. It suits people willing to drive, eat what the grandmother cooks, and accept that the resort strips east of Heraklion are not what they came for.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Samaria gorge, 16 km down to Agia Roumeli, then the ferry to Sougia or Chora Sfakion.
- 02See Knossos early, then the Heraklion Archaeological Museum for the frescoes it was stripped of.
- 03Drive the Lasithi plateau or the Amari valley and eat at a village kafeneio.
- 04Swim at Elafonisi or Balos in the morning before the coaches, then Falassarna for sunset.
- 05Spend an evening in Chania's Venetian harbour, then a raki at a kafeneio in Splantzia.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A first visit should split between Chania or Rethymno's old towns and a village on the south coast; the strip between Heraklion and Malia is package resorts and best avoided unless that is the point.
Unusual things
- ◦Arkadi monastery near Rethymno, where the 1866 powder magazine was blown up rather than surrendered to the Ottomans.
- ◦The Milia mountain settlement in the west, a restored 17th-century hamlet run as an off-grid inn with its own farm.
- ◦Spinalonga, the Venetian island fort that was a leper colony until 1957, reached by boat from Plaka or Elounda.

- Car needed?
- Recommended for most of what is worth seeing
- Getting around
- Heraklion and Chania airports both have buses to their cities in about 30 minutes; KTEL buses run the north-coast road hourly and reach the main gorges and beaches, but the interior and south need a car. Distances are long and mountain roads are slow.

Good to know
The Samaria gorge closes when rain or heat makes it dangerous and is shut from late autumn to spring; check the forest service notice before setting out.
