Why now

Good time in April: 19°C days, sea 17°C.

Late spring and autumn are the workable seasons: warm enough for Mondello, cool enough to walk the centre by day. Summer brings scirocco heat and closed shutters after lunch; Holy Week and the midsummer Festino of Santa Rosalia fill the city with locals rather than visitors.

Best months here: June, September, October. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Palermo is a city of Arab-Norman churches, Baroque decay and street food eaten standing up, held together by its markets more than by any plan. It suits travellers who like their beauty a little damaged and are willing to look up; it frustrates people expecting Florence.

What you can do

  1. 01See the Cappella Palatina's mosaics at opening time, before the coach groups arrive from the port.
  2. 02Eat pane con panelle and sfincione in the Ballarò or Capo market, and arancine from a bar on Via Maqueda.
  3. 03Climb to the Cathedral roof, then see the Martorana and San Cataldo on Piazza Bellini, a short walk past the Quattro Canti.
  4. 04Take bus 806 to Mondello for a swim off the long sandy beach the city uses as its lido.
  5. 05Walk the Kalsa in the late afternoon: Palazzo Abatellis for Antonello da Messina, then a drink on Piazza Marina under the ficus.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

KalsaThe old Arab quarter, bombed in the war and slowly restored; galleries, gardens, evening bars, a few rough edges.
Vucciria and La LoggiaAround the old market, which is now mostly a night-time drinking street; central and noisy until late.
Politeama and Via LibertàThe nineteenth-century city: wide streets, the Teatro Massimo, shops; calmer, and where Palermitani actually live.
Albergheria and BallaròThe market district, dense and multiethnic; the Palazzo dei Normanni on its edge, budget rooms in the middle.

Stay in the Kalsa or along Via Maqueda between the Quattro Canti and the Teatro Massimo; avoid rooms above the Vucciria bars unless you plan to be in them.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Capuchin Catacombs at Piazza Cappuccini, corridors of dressed and mummified Palermitani from the seventeenth to the twentieth century.
  • ◦Palazzo Butera, a restored seafront palace on the Kalsa with a private contemporary collection and a terrace over the Foro Italico.
  • ◦The Zisa, a twelfth-century Norman-Arab summer palace with a cooling water channel, a short bus ride west of the centre.

Day trips

CefalùRegional train, about an hour — Norman cathedral mosaics and a beach in the town; crowded in summer, arrive before eleven.
MonrealeBus 389 from Piazza Indipendenza, about 40 minutes — The Norman cathedral's gold mosaics and the cloister; the bus is slow and full, a taxi is quicker.
SegestaBus or car, about an hour — A Doric temple standing alone on a hillside and a Greek theatre above it; combine with a swim at Castellammare del Golfo.

Getting around
The historic centre is walkable and most of Via Maqueda is pedestrianised; buses are erratic and the tram serves the suburbs. From Punta Raisi airport the train to Palermo Centrale takes about an hour and the Prestia e Comandè bus about 50 minutes.

Good to know

Watch for scooters on pavements and keep bags close in the markets; parking in the centre is an ordeal, so do not rent a car for the city itself.
