Lampedusa
You can be here in October for about €658, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in October: 25°C days, dry, sea 25°C, fares below average.
June and September are the months when the water is warm and the island is not full; in July and August boats to the coves are booked days ahead. From November to April most things close, ferries are erratic and flights thin out.
Best months here: July, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Lampedusa is a flat limestone slab in the Strait of Sicily, nearer Africa than Italy, with a single town, a scrub interior and a south coast of coves that photograph like the Caribbean. It suits people who want to swim and little else; it is also a frontline of Mediterranean migration, and the two facts sit side by side.
What you can do
- 01Swim at the Spiaggia dei Conigli, reached on foot down a path, with daily numbers capped and turtles nesting in summer.
- 02Take a boat round the island for the Tabaccara and Cala Pulcino, the coves with the clearest water.
- 03Eat couscous di pesce and spaghetti with sea urchin, then join the evening walk along Via Roma.
- 04Visit the Porta di Lampedusa, Mimmo Paladino's ceramic gate on the cliff, a memorial to migrants lost at sea.
- 05Snorkel off Cala Croce or Cala Madonna near town, or take the summer hydrofoil to Linosa for black volcanic beaches.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in or just outside the town for a first visit, within walking distance of the harbour; villas on the south plateau are quieter but need a scooter or car.
Unusual things
- ◦The Museum of Trust and Dialogue for the Mediterranean, a small museum near the port on the island's migration history.
- ◦The Tabaccara, a bay on the south-west coast with water so clear that anchored boats appear to float; boats only.
- ◦The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Porto Salvo, a chapel in a garden of cactus and eucalyptus inland from the town.

Good to know
The island is a first landing point for migrants crossing from North Africa; arrivals are managed away from the visitor areas and rarely affect a holiday, but they are a real part of the place.
