Geneva
You can be here in August for about €1,550, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in August: 28°C days, peak fares.
Summer is the lake season, with the Bains des Pâquis open for swimming and long evenings on the quays; winter turns it into a base for the Alps, with the Salève and the Jura an hour away. The motor show and the watch fairs fill every hotel for a week at a time.
Best months here: February, September, December. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Geneva is a small French-speaking city that happens to host the UN, the Red Cross and CERN, so the restaurants are international and the mood is discreet rather than lively. The lake, the Jet d'Eau and the Salève ridge behind the town do most of the work; it suits a calm two days and a mountain trip more than a party.
What you can do
- 01Swim off the Bains des Pâquis jetty and eat fondue there afterwards, the cheapest good meal on the lake.
- 02Book a free guided visit to CERN's Science Gateway and see the Synchrocyclotron hall, about 20 minutes by tram 18.
- 03Walk the Vieille Ville up to St Pierre cathedral and climb the tower for the lake and Mont Blanc on clear days.
- 04Spend an afternoon at the Red Cross museum near the Palais des Nations, more sober than it sounds.
- 05Take the cable car up the Salève from Veyrier, just across the French border, for the view back over the city.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Pâquis or near Cornavin for the lake and the trains, Eaux-Vives for calm; hotels give guests a free transport card and the airport hotels are pointless given the six-minute train.
Unusual things
- ◦The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire's Konrad Witz altarpiece, one of the first paintings with a real landscape, the lake outside the window.
- ◦Patek Philippe Museum in Plainpalais, four floors of watches and automata, closed Sundays and Mondays.
- ◦The Plainpalais flea market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, under the plane trees on the wide diamond-shaped square.
