Bristol
You can be here in July for about €878, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in July: 20°C days, 15 rainy days.
Bristol's harbour festivals and the August balloon fiesta fill rooms and pull crowds to the water; term time gives the city its normal rhythm. Bath is quieter on weekdays and early in the morning, before the coach tours reach the Roman Baths, and its Christmas market makes weekends in early winter dense.
Best months here: May, June, September. July is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Bristol is a port city that turned its docks into a promenade and its walls into a gallery: Brunel's iron ship, Banksy stencils, sound systems, cider, and a habit of ignoring London. Bath, twelve minutes down the line, is the opposite temperament, a Georgian set-piece in honey-coloured stone that is beautiful and knows it. The pairing suits people who want a scruffy, musical base with a formal day out attached.
What you can do
- 01Walk across the Clifton Suspension Bridge, then take the path down through Leigh Woods along the Avon Gorge.
- 02Board the SS Great Britain in the Great Western Dockyard and walk under her hull in the glass-covered dry dock.
- 03Take an early train to Bath Spa for the Roman Baths, then climb to the Circus and the Royal Crescent.
- 04Follow the street art from Stokes Croft's Mild Mild West to Nelson Street and over the river to North Street.
- 05Eat lunch in St Nicholas Market's Glass Arcade, then take a harbour ferry down to Wapping Wharf.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay on the Harbourside for a first visit, in Clifton for quiet, or in Bath's centre if the Georgian city is the reason for the trip. The Broadmead and Cabot Circus shopping area is central but empty after the shops close.
Unusual things
- ◦The Clifton Rocks Railway, a funicular closed in the 1930s and cut into the cliff of the Avon Gorge, opened by volunteers on occasional days.
- ◦Arnos Vale Cemetery, a Victorian garden cemetery on a wooded hillside south of the river, with walks, talks and a café among the tombs.
- ◦The Herschel Museum of Astronomy in Bath, the small house on New King Street from whose garden William Herschel found Uranus.
