Bergen
You can be here in October for about €1,149, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Off season in October: 10°C days, 20 rainy days, fares below average.
The fjord boats and mountain railways run full schedules from late spring to early autumn, and the Hardanger fruit blossom comes just before that; winter cuts some routes and hours but empties the town. Cruise ships dock through the summer and can add several thousand people to Bryggen by mid-morning.
Best months here: May, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Bergen is a wet, wooden Hanseatic port between seven hills, and the gateway to the western fjords: Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord are a boat or bus ride away. It rains on most days, the Bryggen wharf is a UNESCO site full of shops, and the town is at its best when you use it as a base and go out on the water. It suits people who plan around weather rather than against it.
What you can do
- 01Ride the Fløibanen funicular up Fløyen, then walk on to Ulriken and come down by the cable car.
- 02Take the express boat up the Sognefjord to Flåm and return by the Flåm railway and train, the long-day loop.
- 03Buy fish soup or a shrimp sandwich at the Fisketorget market, overpriced but on the harbour.
- 04Visit KODE 3 for the Munch collection and the Rasmus Meyer rooms, quieter than anything in Oslo.
- 05Walk the Bryggen alleys early, before the cruise passengers, then the Hanseatic Museum's merchant rooms.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay around Vågen or Nordnes for the town and the boat quays; spend one night up the fjord if the itinerary allows, rather than doing everything as a loop from Bergen.
Unusual things
- ◦Troldhaugen, Grieg's villa and composing hut by the lake, with lunchtime recitals in summer, 20 minutes by light rail and a walk.
- ◦The Leprosy Museum at St Jørgen's hospital, where Hansen identified the bacterium in the 1870s.
- ◦Fantoft stave church, a 1990s reconstruction after the arson, on the same light-rail line as Troldhaugen.

Good to know
Bergen has around 200 rain days a year; bring a proper shell jacket rather than an umbrella, and expect fjord views to disappear into cloud on some days.
