Why now
Shoulder season in January: 15°C days, sea 14°C.
May, June and September are the months for Puglia: the trulli towns are not yet gridlocked, the masserie are open, and the sea is warm from June. In August the coast is at capacity and the interior shuts down after lunch.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Bari is a port city with a medieval old town that still makes orecchiette on the doorstep and a Murat-era grid of shops and bars beside it. It suits people who use it as a base for Puglia's coast and trulli country and stay for the food; it is not a museum city and does not try to be.
What you can do
- 01Watch the women of Bari Vecchia roll orecchiette on Strada Arco Basso, then eat them with cime di rapa nearby.
- 02See the Basilica of San Nicola, where the saint's relics draw Orthodox pilgrims, and the Romanesque cathedral a few streets on.
- 03Walk the Lungomare Nazario Sauro at sunset; in the morning, buy raw sea urchins from the fishermen at the old port.
- 04Take the train to Polignano a Mare for the cliff-top old town and Lama Monachile cove, 30 minutes south.
- 05Spend a day between Alberobello's trulli, Locorotondo's white lanes and Martina Franca's Baroque, by car or the FSE line.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the Murat grid or on the edge of Bari Vecchia; for a beach holiday base yourself in Polignano, Monopoli or a masseria inland instead.
Unusual things
- ◦The Castellana Caves south of the city, three kilometres of galleries ending at the white calcite Grotta Bianca.
- ◦Castel del Monte, Frederick II's octagonal hilltop castle near Andria, empty of furniture and full of geometry.
- ◦The Teatro Margherita, a former cinema built on stilts over the old harbour, now used for exhibitions.

Good to know
Bari Vecchia's reputation is worse than its reality, but keep to the lit streets after midnight and watch bags around the station.
