Zagreb
You can be here in August for about €713, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in August: 28°C days, peak fares.
Late spring and September give long café evenings without the summer emptying, when locals decamp to the sea and some restaurants close. The Advent markets fill the squares in December and hotel rooms with them.
Best months here: June, September, October. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Zagreb is a Habsburg provincial capital that became a national one, and it still behaves like the former: coffee taken slowly on Tkalčićeva, a market that sets the day's rhythm, trams that run on time. It suits people who like a city to be lived in rather than performed, and who are happy to reach the coast from here rather than skip it.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Upper Town at dusk, from Dolac market up to St Mark's and the Lotrščak tower cannon at noon.
- 02Visit the Museum of Broken Relationships, then the Meštrović Atelier a few doors away.
- 03Buy cheese and cream at Dolac in the morning, when the kumice stalls are stocked and unhurried.
- 04Ride the funicular, one of the shortest in the world, then walk Strossmayer promenade in summer for open-air music.
- 05Spend a Sunday at Mirogoj cemetery, an arcaded Bollé design, then take tram 14 back for lunch.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A first visit should stay in the Lower Town between the station and Ban Jelačić square, or in the Upper Town for quiet; Novi Zagreb across the Sava is cheap but a tram ride from everything.
Unusual things
- ◦The Grič tunnel, a wartime shelter under the Upper Town reopened as a walkway between Mesnička and Radićeva.
- ◦Gallery of the Croatian Association of Artists in Meštrović's round pavilion, a former mosque and museum of the revolution.
- ◦Sljeme's Ski Cup slope on Medvednica, reachable by bus from Mihaljevac, with mountain lodge food and a spring on the way.
