Tirana
You can be here in March for about €419, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in March: 17°C days, 15 rainy days.
Tirana works all year as a city break; the Riviera has a short season, with beach bars and boats running from late spring to early autumn and much of it shuttered in between. June and September give warm sea without the peak weeks, when the diaspora and visitors from Kosovo fill Ksamil and Saranda to capacity.
Best months here: June, September, October. March is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Tirana painted its communist blocks in primary colours and turned the dictator's pyramid into a youth centre; it is small, loud with café talk, and better at evenings than at monuments. The Riviera, five hours south over the Llogara Pass, is a different country of stone villages, shingle coves and Greek-speaking towns. Together they suit people who like a place still working itself out.
What you can do
- 01Ride the Dajti Ekspres cable car above the city, then visit Bunk'Art 1 by the lower station, Hoxha's five-storey nuclear bunker.
- 02Drink coffee in Blloku, the once-closed quarter of the party elite, now the city's bar district.
- 03Eat at Pazari i Ri: byrek, tavë kosi and grilled lamb around the rebuilt market square.
- 04Drive the Llogara Pass down to the Riviera and swim at Gjipe, reached by a half-hour walk through a canyon.
- 05Go to Butrint from Ksamil for a Greek and Roman city in a lagoon; arrive early, before the coaches from Corfu.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
In Tirana stay in Blloku or around Pazari i Ri and walk everywhere; on the Riviera pick Himarë or Dhërmi over Saranda, whose seafront is a wall of concrete.
Unusual things
- ◦The House of Leaves on Rruga Ibrahim Rugova, the Sigurimi's surveillance headquarters turned museum of listening devices and informant files.
- ◦Postbllok, a memorial at the edge of Blloku built from a Berlin Wall segment, a bunker and pit props from the Spaç labour camp.
- ◦Porto Palermo, Ali Pasha's triangular fortress on a near-island below the Himarë road, usually empty.

Local transport

- Bus, 30 min, €4; car for the Riviera

- Recommended for most of what is worth seeing
- Getting around
- Tirana's centre is walkable; city buses are cheap and slow, and taxis are booked by phone or app rather than hailed. The Rinas airport bus runs hourly to the centre in about 30 minutes; for the Riviera, buses from the South-West terminal take five to six hours to Saranda, and a hired car is the realistic way to move between beaches.

Good to know
Driving in Albania is assertive and the Llogara Pass road is slow and winding; check that your insurer covers rental cars there and expect Ksamil to be at capacity in August.
