Berlin
You can be here in October for about €696, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Shoulder season in October: 15°C days, 13 rainy days, fares below average.
Summer is the season the city is built for, with beer gardens, open-air cinemas and lakes reachable by S-Bahn; the film festival in winter, the marathon and the big trade fairs spike hotel rates for a week at a time. Note that the Pergamon Museum is closed for renovation for years, so plan Museum Island around the Neues Museum instead.
Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Berlin is a city of gaps: bombed, divided, half-rebuilt, and still with empty lots between Prussian tenements and prefab slabs where something temporary is always happening. It carries more twentieth-century history per street than anywhere in Europe and wears it with a hangover, a döner and a lake swim. It suits people who like to spend a whole day in one district and do not need a beautiful skyline to feel they have arrived.
What you can do
- 01Start with the Wall at the Bernauer Strasse memorial, where a full stretch of the death strip survives, rather than Checkpoint Charlie.
- 02See Nefertiti in the Neues Museum and the Caspar David Friedrich rooms in the Alte Nationalgalerie, booked for opening time.
- 03Register in advance for the Reichstag dome, then walk the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial's stelae afterwards.
- 04Cycle the old runways of Tempelhofer Feld, then eat on Sonnenallee in Neukölln, the Arabic and Turkish high street.
- 05Take the S-Bahn to Schlachtensee or Wannsee on a hot day and swim from the shore, as the city does.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg for a first visit, in Mitte if the museums are the point and the nights short, in Charlottenburg for old West Berlin calm. Alexanderplatz is a transport hub, not a neighbourhood.
Unusual things
- ◦Teufelsberg, the abandoned Cold War listening station on a rubble hill in the Grunewald, its radomes now covered in graffiti.
- ◦Berliner Unterwelten tours from Gesundbrunnen station into wartime bunkers and the tunnels dug under the Wall.
- ◦The Stasi Museum in Lichtenberg, the ministry's own headquarters with Erich Mielke's offices left exactly as they were.

Good to know
Validate paper tickets before boarding, since plain-clothes inspectors fine on the spot, and give Görlitzer Park a miss after dark.
