Why now
Prime time in June: 26°C days, sea 23°C.
June and September give warm water, open beach bars and half the crowds of the peak, when Golden Sands and Sunny Beach fill with package holidaymakers. Out of season the resorts close almost entirely, but the city carries on and the Sea Garden is empty.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Varna is Bulgaria's port and summer capital, a working city of neo-baroque streets and a long Sea Garden park above the beach, with resorts strung north along the coast to the Romanian border. It suits people who want a real city with a beach rather than a resort with a town, and a base for the monasteries and cliffs of the Black Sea coast.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Sea Garden from the Aquarium to the beach, then swim from the city sands below.
- 02See the Varna Gold in the Archaeological Museum, the oldest worked gold in the world.
- 03Eat grilled fish and shopska salad on the beach at the fishermen's restaurants near the port.
- 04Visit the Roman thermae, the largest baths in the Balkans, then the Dormition Cathedral.
- 05Take a day to Balchik's palace and botanical garden, then the cliffs and lighthouse at Cape Kaliakra.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
The city centre or near the Sea Garden for a first visit; the northern resorts suit families who want a beach at the door but not a city.
Unusual things
- ◦Aladzha Monastery, cave cells cut into a limestone cliff in the forest above Golden Sands.
- ◦The Stone Forest at Pobiti Kamani, natural stone columns on a sand plain twenty minutes west of the city.
- ◦The Naval Museum on the seafront, with the torpedo boat Drazki from the Balkan Wars outside.
