Why now

Good time in October: 28°C days, 20 rainy days, sea 26°C.

The dry, hot months of the southern summer coincide with the busiest festivals and the highest prices, while the mid-year months bring rain but also the São João celebrations inland. Tuesday nights in Pelourinho have open-air music all year.

Best months here: October, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Salvador da Bahia is the Afro-Brazilian capital: a baroque upper town on a cliff, a working lower town on the bay, and a culture of drumming, Candomblé and dendê oil that is lived rather than performed. It suits people who want music and food more than comfort, and who can handle heat and a certain edge.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk Pelourinho in the morning, from Terreiro de Jesus to the Igreja de São Francisco's gilded interior.
  2. 02Take the Elevador Lacerda down to the Mercado Modelo and the Cidade Baixa's harbour.
  3. 03Eat acarajé from a baiana's stall in Rio Vermelho in the evening, with vatapá and hot pepper.
  4. 04Swim at Porto da Barra beach and stay for sunset by the Santo Antônio fort.
  5. 05See the Igreja do Bonfim and its room of wax offerings, tying a ribbon on the railing outside.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

PelourinhoThe colonial core: churches, drum schools, guesthouses in old townhouses; lively by day, take taxis at night.
BarraBeach neighbourhood by the lighthouse; mid-range hotels, calm sea, walkable, the easiest first-visit base.
Rio VermelhoBohemian and residential, the city's best bars and acarajé stalls; no swimming beach, good nightlife.
Santo Antônio Além do CarmoQuiet townhouse street north of Pelourinho with pousadas and views of the bay; a short walk to the centre.

Barra for a first visit, Santo Antônio for character; Pelourinho is atmospheric but noisy and needs care after dark.

Unusual things

  • ◦A rehearsal of Olodum or Ilê Aiyê in their neighbourhood spaces, drumming groups that shaped the city's carnival.
  • ◦The Solar do Unhão, a colonial sugar mill on the bay turned Museu de Arte Moderna, with jazz on Saturday evenings.
  • ◦The Feira de São Joaquim, the city's real market in the lower town: herbs for Candomblé, fish, dendê oil, palm fronds.

Day trips

Morro de São PauloCatamaran across the bay, about 2 hours — Car-free island beaches numbered one to four; crowded in summer, better with an overnight.
Praia do ForteBus or car, about 1.5 hours north — Turtle project of Tamar, a beach village and a ruined castle; heavily visited but easy.
CachoeiraBus, about 2 hours inland — Baroque town on the Paraguaçu river in the Recôncavo, with cigar factories and a strong Candomblé tradition.

Good to know

Petty theft and muggings are common in and around Pelourinho after dark and on empty beaches; carry little, use taxis at night, and stay on the well-lit streets.
