Salvador da Bahia
You can be here in October for about €1,860, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Good time in October: 28°C days, 20 rainy days, sea 26°C.
The dry, hot months of the southern summer coincide with the busiest festivals and the highest prices, while the mid-year months bring rain but also the São João celebrations inland. Tuesday nights in Pelourinho have open-air music all year.
Best months here: October, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Salvador da Bahia is the Afro-Brazilian capital: a baroque upper town on a cliff, a working lower town on the bay, and a culture of drumming, Candomblé and dendê oil that is lived rather than performed. It suits people who want music and food more than comfort, and who can handle heat and a certain edge.
What you can do
- 01Walk Pelourinho in the morning, from Terreiro de Jesus to the Igreja de São Francisco's gilded interior.
- 02Take the Elevador Lacerda down to the Mercado Modelo and the Cidade Baixa's harbour.
- 03Eat acarajé from a baiana's stall in Rio Vermelho in the evening, with vatapá and hot pepper.
- 04Swim at Porto da Barra beach and stay for sunset by the Santo Antônio fort.
- 05See the Igreja do Bonfim and its room of wax offerings, tying a ribbon on the railing outside.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Barra for a first visit, Santo Antônio for character; Pelourinho is atmospheric but noisy and needs care after dark.
Unusual things
- ◦A rehearsal of Olodum or Ilê Aiyê in their neighbourhood spaces, drumming groups that shaped the city's carnival.
- ◦The Solar do Unhão, a colonial sugar mill on the bay turned Museu de Arte Moderna, with jazz on Saturday evenings.
- ◦The Feira de São Joaquim, the city's real market in the lower town: herbs for Candomblé, fish, dendê oil, palm fronds.

Good to know
Petty theft and muggings are common in and around Pelourinho after dark and on empty beaches; carry little, use taxis at night, and stay on the well-lit streets.
