Why now
Prime time in July: 31°C days, sea 27°C.
Spring and autumn are the seasons for combining the city with the islands and Pompeii; summer is humid, and many Neapolitans leave in August, taking their shops with them. Weekend crowds in the centro storico have grown sharply, so weekday visits are calmer.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Naples is loud, dense and unpolished, with a historic centre still lived in by the people who were born there rather than restored for visitors. It suits those who will tolerate scooters on the pavement in exchange for the best pizza and coffee in Italy; it is not a city for people who need order.
What you can do
- 01Walk Spaccanapoli end to end, from Piazza del Gesù to Via Duomo, ducking into Santa Chiara's majolica cloister.
- 02See Caravaggio's Seven Works of Mercy at Pio Monte della Misericordia, then the Veiled Christ in the Cappella Sansevero.
- 03Eat a pizza margherita at a Sanità or Materdei pizzeria, then a sfogliatella from a bar counter.
- 04Spend a morning in the Archaeological Museum with the Farnese marbles and the Pompeii frescoes before going to Pompeii itself.
- 05Take the funicular to Vomero for the Certosa di San Martino and the view over the bay from Castel Sant'Elmo.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the centro storico or along Via Toledo for a first visit, Chiaia for calm; the streets around the central station are functional but grim at night.
Unusual things
- ◦The Catacombs of San Gennaro, an early Christian burial complex run by a Sanità neighbourhood cooperative.
- ◦The Fontanelle Cemetery, a tufa cavern of anonymous skulls once adopted by local families; opening has been intermittent.
- ◦Napoli Sotterranea, Greek cisterns and wartime shelters forty metres below Via dei Tribunali.

Good to know
Bag snatching from scooters happens on the narrow streets; keep phones and bags on the wall side, and use only official white taxis.
