Costa Rica
You can be here in December for about €1,293, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in December: 25°C days.
The dry season from roughly December to April is the busy one, with full lodges and dusty Pacific roads; the green season brings afternoon rain, lower occupancy and the fullest waterfalls. The Caribbean coast runs on its own calendar, driest in the months when the Pacific is wettest.
Best months here: January, February, March. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — 9.93°, -84.08°, near San José (Alajuela). Somewhere else in Costa Rica the numbers will differ.
The place

Costa Rica is a small country that sells one thing, nature, and mostly delivers it: cloud forest, two coasts, volcanoes and a national park system that works. It suits people who plan a loop of two or three bases rather than one; the capital, San José, is a transit point, and the distances on slow roads are longer than the map suggests.
What you can do
- 01Walk the hanging bridges at Monteverde early, then the cloud-forest reserve trails before the mist closes in.
- 02See sloths, monkeys and capuchins on the short trails of Manuel Antonio, arriving at opening time.
- 03Soak in the hot rivers below Arenal volcano at La Fortuna after a rainy afternoon.
- 04Take a boat through the canals of Tortuguero, and a night walk for nesting turtles in season.
- 05Surf or watch surfing at Playa Guiones in Nosara, then eat a casado at a soda.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Spend a night near the airport in Alajuela on arrival, then two or three bases; a common loop is Arenal, Monteverde and a Pacific beach, or Arenal and the Caribbean coast for fewer crowds.
Unusual things
- ◦The Río Celeste in Tenorio Volcano National Park, a river turned turquoise by volcanic minerals, reached by a muddy trail.
- ◦The Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park, the country's wildest corner, reached by small plane or boat from Sierpe.
- ◦The stone spheres of the Diquís at Finca 6 near Palmar Sur, pre-Columbian carvings listed by UNESCO.

- Recommended for most of what is worth seeing
- Getting around
- A rental car, ideally 4WD in the green season, gives the freedom the country rewards; shared shuttles link the main tourist bases in three to five hours each, and domestic flights save a day to the Osa. San José's Juan Santamaría airport is in Alajuela, 30 to 45 minutes from the centre.

Good to know
Rip currents drown swimmers every year on the Pacific beaches; swim only where locals do and take the red flags seriously.
