Why now

Prime time in September: 24°C days.

Summer is when the city lives outdoors, with free concerts in Millennium Park and the lakefront path full, but hotels are at their most expensive; early autumn keeps the warmth and thins the crowds. Big conventions at McCormick Place spike prices unpredictably through the year.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Chicago is the American city for architecture and lakefront, with a grid that makes sense, a downtown you can walk and neighbourhoods that still feel like the ethnic villages they were built as. It suits people who like buildings, blues, and a proper big city without New York's crush; the winter wind off the lake is not a figure of speech.

What you can do

  1. 01Take the Chicago Architecture Center's river cruise, the one thing nobody regrets, then walk the Riverwalk afterward.
  2. 02Spend a morning at the Art Institute, then cross to Millennium Park's Bean and the Pritzker Pavilion.
  3. 03Ride the Brown Line 'L' around the Loop for the elevated view of the old skyscrapers.
  4. 04Eat deep-dish once for the record, then Italian beef, a Chicago dog and a tavern-cut thin crust.
  5. 05Hear blues at Kingston Mines or Buddy Guy's Legends, or jazz at the Green Mill in Uptown.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

The Loop and River NorthThe skyscrapers, the museums, most hotels; convenient and quiet at night outside the restaurant blocks.
Wicker Park and Logan SquareBars, record shops and restaurants along the Blue Line; the base for evenings out.
Lincoln Park and LakeviewLeafy, brownstoned, near the zoo and Wrigley Field; residential calm with lake access.
PilsenMexican murals, the National Museum of Mexican Art, taquerias and galleries on 18th Street.

Stay in the Loop or River North for a first visit and short distances to the museums; Wicker Park or Logan Square if you would rather sleep near the bars and ride the Blue Line in.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Frederick C. Robie House in Hyde Park, Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie-style masterwork, with Oak Park's houses further out.
  • ◦The Chicago Pedway, a partial network of tunnels and bridges under the Loop, useful in winter and oddly interesting.
  • ◦The Garfield Park Conservatory on the west side, glasshouses from 1908 reached directly by the Green Line.
