Panama City
You can be here in February for about €966, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in February: 32°C days, sea 28°C.
The dry season from roughly December to April is the comfortable window, with trade winds and clear skies; the long green season brings afternoon downpours but lower hotel occupancy and full rivers. Carnival week closes much of the city and sends everyone to the interior.
Best months here: January, February, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Panama City is a banking skyline on a tropical bay with a restored colonial quarter at one end and the canal at the other, and a rainforest inside the city limits. It suits people who want a comfortable, well-connected base with genuine nature an hour away; the city itself is more pleasant than interesting.
What you can do
- 01Watch ships pass the Miraflores Locks from the visitor centre, ideally when a Panamax vessel is scheduled.
- 02Walk Casco Viejo's plazas and churches in the late afternoon, then rooftop bars after dark.
- 03Take the Cinta Costera to the Mercado de Mariscos for ceviche in a plastic cup.
- 04Spend a morning in Parque Natural Metropolitano, a forest with sloths and toucans inside the city.
- 05Visit the Biomuseo by Frank Gehry on the Amador Causeway, then cycle the causeway to the islands.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Casco Viejo for atmosphere, El Cangrejo for value and the metro; the skyscraper hotels along the bay are fine but you will be in taxis constantly.

Good to know
Avoid walking through El Chorrillo and Curundú, the districts west and north of Casco Viejo, and treat the green season's afternoon storms as a reason to plan outdoor activities for the morning.
