Why now

Prime time in November: 25°C days, fares below average.

Autumn brings the dry, clear months and the hiking season; spring is humid and foggy, summer is hot with typhoon warnings, and winter is short and mild. Hotels fill around the big trade fairs and the rugby sevens, and Lunar New Year closes family restaurants and shops for days.

Best months here: February, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — 22.32°, 114.17°, near Hong Kong. Somewhere else in Hong Kong the numbers will differ.

The place

Hong Kong is vertical and steep: towers on reclaimed land, Kowloon tenements with roast-meat shops at their feet, and hills and beaches thirty minutes from the office lifts. The harbour still organises everything, ferries and trams still run, and the food, from a bowl of wonton noodles to a Cantonese banquet, is the point. It suits people who like density and a walk that ends in the sea; its mood has changed since 2019.

What you can do

  1. 01Ride the Star Ferry from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central on the lower deck, then queue for the Peak Tram up.
  2. 02Eat dim sum mid-morning in Sham Shui Po, then walk its fabric, bead and electronics streets around Apliu Street.
  3. 03Hike the Dragon's Back from Shek O Road to Big Wave Bay, about two hours, and swim at the end.
  4. 04Ride the tram from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan in the upper deck's front seat, ninety minutes of the north shore.
  5. 05Queue for roast goose at Yat Lok in Central or Kam's in Wan Chai, then egg tarts from Tai Cheong Bakery.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Central and Sheung WanBanks, the Mid-Levels escalator, dried-seafood shops and the bar streets around Tai Ping Shan; expensive rooms, everything on foot or by tram.
Tsim Sha TsuiKowloon's harbourfront: the Star Ferry, Nathan Road hotels and the M+ galleries at West Kowloon; busy, central, the classic first base.
Wan Chai and Causeway BayWet markets and old tenements next to department stores; mid-range hotels, Victoria Park and the tram through the middle.
Mong KokKowloon at full density: the Ladies' Market, the goldfish and flower streets, cheap rooms and noise; two MTR lines through it.

Stay in Tsim Sha Tsui for the harbour and the ferry, or Sheung Wan and Central for the island side; rooms are small everywhere, and the New Territories add an hour to every day.

Unusual things

  • ◦Kowloon Walled City Park, where the demolished lawless enclave is now a garden with the old yamen and a model of the blocks.
  • ◦Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden at Diamond Hill, a Tang-style timber complex built without nails under the housing estates.
  • ◦The Ping Shan Heritage Trail in Yuen Long: walled villages, ancestral halls and the territory's one old pagoda, reached by Light Rail.

Day trips

Lantau: Ngong Ping and Tai OMTR to Tung Chung, then the cable car or bus 23 to Ngong Ping and bus 21 on to Tai O; a full day — The Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, then a stilt village of dried-fish shops; the cable-car queue is the day's main cost in time.
Cheung ChauFerry from Central Pier 5, 35 to 55 minutes — A car-free island of bicycles, fish restaurants and a small beach; its spring bun festival is the one time it is crowded.
MacauFerry from Sheung Wan or the bus across the bridge, about an hour; passport needed — Portuguese squares and egg tarts in the old centre, casinos in Cotai; a day covers the old town.

Good to know

Typhoon and black-rain warnings shut transport and offices for a day at a time in summer, and the National Security Law means political speech and protest carry real risk; read your government's advice before going.
