Dubai
You can be here in January for about €1,337, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in January: 24°C days, dry, sea 22°C.
November to March is when the outdoors works; summer is over forty degrees and the city moves indoors, which is also when the hotels are cheapest. Ramadan slows the daytime and fills the nights, and the big shopping and food festivals push hotel demand in winter.
Best months here: January, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Dubai is a city of highways and towers built in forty years on a creek that still has wooden dhows unloading Iranian goods. The malls, the beach clubs and the Burj Khalifa are the advertised version; the older city around the Creek, with its Indian and Iranian quarters, is where the place has texture. It suits people who like new things done at scale, and people passing through who give the old side a day.
What you can do
- 01Cross the Creek by abra from Bur Dubai to Deira for the gold and spice souks, at dusk.
- 02Walk Al Fahidi's restored wind-tower houses and the Al Shindagha museum before the heat.
- 03Go up the Burj Khalifa at sunset, booked in advance, then watch the fountains from the lake side.
- 04Eat Emirati food at Al Fanar or a Pakistani grill in Karama, both far from the hotel restaurants.
- 05Take the metro to the Marina and walk the beach at JBR, or the Kite Beach path further up.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Bur Dubai or Deira for the old city and the metro, Downtown or the Marina for the modern one; hotels on the Palm are for resort holidays and a long taxi from anywhere else.
Unusual things
- ◦Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz, warehouses turned galleries and cafés, the city's real art scene.
- ◦Hatta, an enclave in the Hajar mountains with a dam, kayaking and a restored heritage village.
- ◦The Etihad Museum, on the site where the UAE was signed into existence, which explains the country in an hour.
