Luxembourg
You can be here in June for about €1,570, 4 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in June: 23°C days.
Spring and autumn suit the walks along the ramparts and the Mullerthal trails; the city empties at weekends when the commuters go home, which makes it quiet for visitors. The Schueberfouer funfair and the Christmas markets are the crowded moments.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled". This page stands for a whole country, and its weather is measured at one point — 49.61°, 6.13°, near Luxembourg. Somewhere else in Luxembourg the numbers will differ.
The place

Luxembourg City is a fortress town on two gorges, with a banking and EU quarter on the plateau above and the old lower districts of Grund and Clausen along the river. It suits people who like walking up and down, museums with no queues, and a weekend that combines three countries without a border check.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Chemin de la Corniche along the old walls, then down into the Grund and the Bock casemates.
- 02See the Mudam contemporary art museum in I.M. Pei's building on the Kirchberg plateau, then the Fort Thüngen.
- 03Eat judd mat gaardebounen, smoked pork with broad beans, at a traditional restaurant in the old town.
- 04Take the free train to Vianden for the castle, an hour north through the Ardennes.
- 05Ride the Pfaffenthal panoramic lift and the tram across the Red Bridge for the gorge views.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
The Ville Haute or the Grund for a first visit; the Gare district is convenient for early trains but the streets around it are the least pleasant in the city.
Unusual things
- ◦The Bock casemates, a warren of galleries in the rock beneath the old fortress, open in the warmer months.
- ◦The American Cemetery at Hamm, where General Patton is buried, a bus ride from the centre.
- ◦The Neumünster abbey's Sunday morning jazz concerts in the Grund cloister.
