Why now

Prime time in April: 26°C days, dry, sea 19°C.

The dry season from the end of the rains brings cooler harmattan mornings and the calmest ocean; the rainy months are humid, with flooded streets in the suburbs. Dakar's big biennial art event and the wrestling season fill hotels in ways the weather does not predict.

Best months here: June, October, December. April is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Dakar occupies the westernmost tip of Africa, a peninsula city of surf breaks, mbalax clubs and a French-Wolof street life that runs on tea, fish and long conversations. It suits travellers who like a city with a beach in it rather than a resort, and who do not mind being noticed.

What you can do

  1. 01Take the ferry to Gorée Island, twenty minutes, for the House of Slaves and the quiet lanes.
  2. 02Eat thiéboudienne, the national rice-and-fish dish, at lunch in the Plateau or Médina.
  3. 03Surf or watch surfers at N'Gor and Ouakam, where the film Endless Summer stopped.
  4. 04See the Museum of Black Civilisations, then the IFAN museum's masks across town.
  5. 05Dance late to mbalax in Almadies or Les Mamelles; nothing starts before one.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

PlateauThe colonial downtown, ministries, markets and the port; central, busy by day, quiet at night.
Almadies and N'GorBeaches, surf lodges, seafood restaurants and clubs on the western tip; far from downtown.
Point E and FannResidential, embassies, university, good restaurants; the sensible middle ground.
MédinaThe old African quarter behind the Plateau; mosques, tailors, street murals, cheap food.

Almadies for beaches and nightlife, Point E or Fann for a central base; the Plateau is convenient by day but dead and poorly lit after dark.

Unusual things

  • ◦Lac Rose (Lake Retba), a pink salt lake north of the city, where salt is still harvested by hand.
  • ◦The Phare des Mamelles lighthouse hill at sunset, with a bar at the top and the Monument of African Renaissance below.
  • ◦Village des Arts, artists' studios in an old military camp near the airport road, open to visitors.

Day trips

Île de GoréeFerry from the port, 20 minutes, roughly hourly — UNESCO site, no cars, best after the day-trippers' boat has left.
Lac RoseTaxi, about 1 hour northeast — Pink at its best in the dry season; dunes to the ocean beyond.
Saint-LouisCar or bus, about 4 hours north — Former colonial capital on an island, faded French houses; worth a night.

Good to know

Persistent street sellers and occasional bag-snatching are the main irritants; the Casamance region in the south has a separate advisory, so check before extending the trip.
