Why now

Good time in June: 20°C days.

Summer has white nights, terraces and the Old Town Days, but also up to four cruise ships a day emptying into the same six streets between ten and four. Late spring and September keep the light without the ships; the winter market on the Town Hall square is one of the oldest in Europe and the snow usually holds.

Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Tallinn is a Hanseatic walled town with a start-up economy attached, where a medieval pharmacy still trades on the main square and the tram ticket is a tap of a bank card. The Old Town is intact and, by day, almost entirely given over to visitors; the city Estonians live in is in the wooden streets of Kalamaja and the ex-industrial yards around it. It suits a long weekend, a first taste of the Baltics, and anyone who wants Helsinki thrown in by ferry.

What you can do

  1. 01Climb St Olaf's tower, open in the warmer months, for the lower town's roofs and the ferries coming in from Helsinki.
  2. 02Spend a morning in Kumu, the national art museum built into Kadriorg's limestone bank; the Soviet-era galleries are the surprise.
  3. 03Eat at Balti Jaam market: black bread, smoked fish, pelmeni upstairs, and the second-hand stalls outside.
  4. 04Walk from Telliskivi through Kalamaja's wooden streets to Noblessner and the Seaplane Harbour's submarine Lembit.
  5. 05Take the tour of the KGB listening rooms on the 23rd floor of Hotel Viru, left as they were found in 1991.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Old Town (Vanalinn)Walls, towers and the best-kept medieval core in northern Europe; restaurants pitched at cruise passengers, quiet at night. Where most first visits stay.
Kalamaja and TelliskiviWooden houses, the Balti Jaam market and the Telliskivi Creative City's bars and galleries; where the city under forty lives, ten minutes from the walls.
KadriorgPeter the Great's palace and park, the Kumu museum, embassies in wooden villas; calm, tram 1 or 3 to the centre.
Noblessner and RotermannA submarine shipyard turned marina with the Kai art centre and restaurants; Rotermann's mill-and-glass blocks by Viru Gate for design hotels.

Stay in the Old Town for a first visit but pick a street off Raekoja plats, and remember it goes quiet early; Kalamaja or Rotermann suit a second visit or anyone who wants bars without the cruise crowds.

Unusual things

  • ◦The row of dismantled Soviet statues, Lenins included, laid out behind Maarjamäe Palace on the Pirita road beside the history museum.
  • ◦Linnahall, the vast limestone concert hall built for the 1980 Olympic sailing events, closed and slowly crumbling beside the ferry port.
  • ◦Kalamaja cemetery park, a burial ground the Soviets cleared of gravestones in the 1960s, now a wooded park with almost no trace.

Day trips

Lahemaa National ParkCar, about 1 hour east; buses are sparse — The Viru bog boardwalk, the Palmse and Sagadi manors and Käsmu, a village of sea captains' houses; without a car it barely works.
HelsinkiFerry, about 2 hours, several sailings a day — A different country by lunchtime; the morning boat out and evening boat back is a standard move, and the ships are more shopping mall than ferry.
PaldiskiTrain from Balti Jaam, about 1 hour — A closed Soviet naval base until the mid-1990s, now the Pakri cliffs, a lighthouse and a lot of empty barracks; bleak and interesting.

Good to know

Old Town streets are cobbled and icy from December to March; the pharmacies sell shoe spikes and they are worth having.
