Why now

Shoulder season in March: 15°C days, 13 rainy days.

Spring and autumn have the light and the tolerable queues; July and August are hot, humid and crowded around the big sights. Museums and the major mosques keep different rhythms, and mosques close to visitors during the five daily prayers, so plan mornings around them rather than against them.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Istanbul is two continents, three empires and sixteen million people who still stop for tea at four. The imperial core on the Sultanahmet peninsula is what people come for; the city that keeps them is across the Golden Horn and over the Bosphorus, where ferries, meyhanes and steep streets do the work the monuments cannot. It suits walkers with stamina and people who like their history served with a fish sandwich.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern before ten, before the tour groups arrive.
  2. 02Take a public ferry from Eminönü up the Bosphorus and get off at Anadolu Kavağı for lunch.
  3. 03Eat a full meyhane dinner on Nevizade Sokak off İstiklal: cold mezze, raki, grilled fish, no hurry.
  4. 04Spend a slow afternoon in Kadıköy on the Asian side, from the fish market to Moda's waterfront.
  5. 05See the Süleymaniye Mosque at dusk, then walk down through the workshops of the Grand Bazaar district.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

SultanahmetThe monuments and the tour buses; convenient for a first two days, oddly dead at night.
Karaköy and GalataBridge-level cafés, the tower, steep lanes up to Beyoğlu; the best base for most visitors.
CihangirAntique shops, cats, cafés on slopes above the Bosphorus; residential and calm, near Taksim.
KadıköyAsian-side food streets and bars, a twenty-minute ferry from Europe; where locals would tell you to stay.

Stay in Galata, Karaköy or Cihangir for evenings and ferries within reach; Sultanahmet for two nights of monuments only. Kadıköy is good value if the ferry timetable does not bother you.

Unusual things

  • ◦Kariye Mosque (Chora), with the best surviving Byzantine mosaics and frescoes in the city, out by the Theodosian walls.
  • ◦Balat and Fener, the old Greek and Jewish quarters on the Golden Horn, with the Bulgarian iron church and steep painted streets.
  • ◦The Büyükada ferry to the Princes' Islands, where there are no cars and the Greek Orthodox monastery sits on the hilltop.

Day trips

Princes' IslandsFerry from Kabataş or Eminönü, about 90 minutes to Büyükada — Wooden mansions, bicycles and pine woods; avoid summer weekends when the ferries are packed.
BursaFerry to Mudanya from Eminönü, then bus, about 2.5 hours in total — The first Ottoman capital: green tiled tombs, a silk market and İskender kebab at its source.
EdirneCoach from Esenler, about 2.5 to 3 hours — Sinan's Selimiye Mosque, a working oil-wrestling tradition and almost no foreign visitors.

Getting around
Ferries, the M2 metro and the T1 tram cover most journeys with an Istanbulkart; traffic is bad enough that taxis are a last resort. Istanbul Airport is far to the north, about an hour by Havaist bus or the M11 metro; Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side is served by the M4 metro.

Good to know

Carpet-shop and shoe-shine approaches around Sultanahmet are persistent but harmless; the bar scam on İstiklal, where a friendly stranger leads you to a club with an inflated bill, is not.
