Kyoto
You can be here in December for about €823, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in December: 11°C days.
Cherry blossom and autumn colour are the peak seasons and the hardest for rooms; the weeks either side keep most of the beauty with far fewer people. Summer is humid, with the Gion Matsuri parades in July, and winter is cold, clear and empty.
Best months here: May, October, November. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Kyoto is a grid of temples, gardens and machiya townhouses where the famous sights are overrun by mid-morning and the quiet ones are ten minutes' walk away; Osaka, fifteen minutes by train, is its loud, hungry opposite. Together they suit travellers who want both the ritual and the street food, and who are willing to start early.
What you can do
- 01Walk Fushimi Inari's torii tunnels before 8am, continuing past the crowds to the summit loop.
- 02See Kinkaku-ji, then walk south down the Philosopher's Path to Nanzen-ji's aqueduct.
- 03Eat kaiseki once, and otherwise obanzai lunches and Nishiki Market snacks.
- 04Take the Keihan line to Osaka and eat kushikatsu in Shinsekai and takoyaki in Dotonbori.
- 05Spend a morning in Arashiyama: the bamboo grove early, then Tenryu-ji's garden and the Okochi Sanso villa.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay downtown near Karasuma or Kawaramachi for a first visit, in a machiya or small ryokan if the budget allows; Gion is beautiful but limits restaurant options after nine, and Osaka works as a cheaper base for both cities.
Unusual things
- ◦Ohara's Sanzen-in and the moss gardens, an hour north by bus, in a valley of farms and pickle shops.
- ◦The Kyoto Botanical Gardens and the Kamo river walk north from Demachiyanagi, where locals actually go.
- ◦Osaka's Kuromon market at breakfast, then the Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses at Hattori Ryokuchi park.
