The place
Krabi is the mainland side of the Andaman: limestone cliffs dropping into the sea at Railay, a working river town with a night market, and a scatter of islands from the busy Phi Phi to the slower Lanta. It suits climbers, kayakers and beach people who want to move between islands rather than settle in a resort.

- 01Climb or take a lesson on Railay's limestone at Tonsai, then walk to Phra Nang cave beach.
- 02Take the four-island longtail tour from Ao Nang: Poda, Chicken Island, Tup and Phra Nang.
- 03Eat at Krabi Town's night market by the river, then the Chao Fah pier stalls.
- 04Climb the 1,260 steps at Wat Tham Suea, the Tiger Cave temple, for the view.
- 05Spend two nights on Koh Lanta and cycle the quiet east coast to Lanta Old Town.

Good to know
During the monsoon months many island boats are cancelled and the marine parks close; longtail crossings to Railay can be rough and wet even in good weather.
