Why now

Shoulder season in March: 36°C days, dry.

The dry season is hot but reliable; the rainy months bring short, violent afternoon storms that flood streets for an hour and then clear. Tet closes the city for a week, and the run-up to it is the one time the traffic is worse than usual.

Best months here: January, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Ho Chi Minh City, still Saigon to most of its residents, is the commercial engine of Vietnam: motorbike rivers, rooftop bars, French colonial leftovers around District 1 and a Chinese quarter in Cholon that runs on its own rhythm. It is louder, hotter and faster than Hanoi, and it suits people who want food, nightlife and a base for the Mekong.

What you can do

  1. 01Eat banh mi from a Huynh Hoa-style stall, com tam for lunch and a Ben Thanh street-food dinner.
  2. 02Visit the War Remnants Museum, then Independence Palace across the park.
  3. 03Walk District 1 from Notre-Dame and the Central Post Office to the Opera House and the river.
  4. 04Explore Cholon's Binh Tay market and Thien Hau pagoda in District 5.
  5. 05Take a morning Mekong boat trip, or a night motorbike food tour through Districts 3 and 4.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

District 1The colonial centre, hotels, bars and the Bui Vien backpacker strip; convenient, noisy in parts.
District 3Villas, cafés, pagodas and residential lanes just west of the centre; calmer and walkable.
Thao Dien, District 2Riverside expat enclave with international restaurants and villas; 20 minutes out, quiet.
Cholon, District 5The Chinese quarter, markets, temples and Cantonese food; few hotels, worth a morning.

District 1 near Dong Khoi or Le Thanh Ton for a first visit, District 3 for quiet and character; Bui Vien only for backpackers who plan to be awake at 3am.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Fine Arts Museum in a 1930s mansion on Pho Duc Chinh Street, with lacquer paintings and war-era work.
  • ◦The apartment block at 42 Nguyen Hue, a tower of cafés and shops in a former residential building.
  • ◦The Cu Chi tunnels' Ben Duoc site, quieter than Ben Dinh, with a temple and river approach.

Day trips

Mekong Delta (My Tho and Ben Tre)Bus or tour, about 2 hours — Canals by sampan, coconut workshops, fruit orchards; the standard tours are formulaic, private boats are better.
Cu Chi tunnelsBus or speedboat, about 1.5 hours — The Viet Cong tunnel network; the river route from Bach Dang pier is more pleasant.
Vung TauHydrofoil or bus, about 2 hours — A beach town with a giant Christ statue and seafood; Saigon's weekend escape.

Good to know

Bag and phone snatching from motorbikes is common in District 1, so keep phones away from the kerb and bags on the inside shoulder.
