Bangkok
You can be here in April for about €483, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Off season in April: 35°C days.
The cool, dry months after the monsoon are the comfortable ones and the busiest; the hot season before the rains is punishing by midday, and the New Year water festival shuts much of the city for days. The rainy season means short, heavy late-afternoon storms rather than lost days, and emptier hotels.
Best months here: January, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Bangkok is a city of sois, the side lanes off the big roads, where a plastic-stool noodle shop, a spirit house and a glass tower share one block. It suits people who accept traffic and heat as the price of the best street food in Asia and a river that still works as a road.
What you can do
- 01Take the Chao Phraya Express Boat from Sathorn pier to Tha Chang and be at the Grand Palace when it opens.
- 02Walk Yaowarat Road after dark for Chinatown's street kitchens: grilled prawns, kuay jab, and the dessert stalls.
- 03See Wat Pho's reclining Buddha, then cross to Wat Arun on the ferry from Tha Tien for a few baht.
- 04Spend Saturday morning at Chatuchak Weekend Market and leave before the heat peaks around noon.
- 05Ride the Khlong Saen Saep canal boat from Pratunam to Phan Fa, the back way into the old city and the Golden Mount.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay near a BTS stop on Sukhumvit or in Silom and Sathorn for a first visit; the riverside is calmer and better for the old city, and Khao San is loud and far from the trains.
Unusual things
- ◦Loha Prasat at Wat Ratchanatdaram, a 37-spired 'metal castle' of concentric corridors, usually empty while the Golden Mount queues.
- ◦Bang Krachao, the river-bend island opposite Khlong Toei, cycled on raised concrete paths through nipa palms and orchards.
- ◦The Bangkokian Museum on Charoen Krung Soi 43, three 1930s houses kept as a middle-class family left them.

Good to know
The 'Grand Palace is closed today' line from tuk-tuk drivers and friendly strangers near the palace is a detour to a tailor or gem shop; the palace opens daily and enforces a dress code at the gate.
