Bali
You can be here in August for about €469, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Good time in August: 28°C days, 15 rainy days, sea 27°C, peak fares.
The dry season brings clean surf on the west coast and clear volcano mornings; the wet season means afternoon downpours, beach rubbish washed in on the currents, and emptier roads. Nyepi, the day of silence, closes the airport and confines everyone indoors for 24 hours, which is either a nuisance or the most interesting day of the year.
Best months here: June, September, October. August is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Bali is a Hindu island inside a Muslim country, with daily offerings on every doorstep, rice terraces up the volcano slopes and a south coast that has been built over by surf bars, villas and traffic. The island you find depends on which twenty kilometres you choose. It suits surfers, yoga people and families equally, as long as they leave Kuta quickly.
What you can do
- 01Walk the Campuhan ridge at dawn from Ubud, then the Tegallalang or Jatiluwih terraces.
- 02Surf or watch at Uluwatu, then the kecak dance at the cliff temple at sunset.
- 03Eat babi guling at Ibu Oka's or a warung in Gianyar, and nasi campur everywhere.
- 04Climb Mount Batur for sunrise, a two-hour ascent starting at 4am.
- 05See the water temple of Tirta Empul and the royal tombs at Gunung Kawi, north of Ubud.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Split the trip: Ubud's outskirts for the interior, then Uluwatu, Canggu or the east coast for the sea; avoid Kuta and Legian, and check driving times before booking anything described as 'near Ubud'.
Unusual things
- ◦Tenganan, a walled Bali Aga village near Candidasa that predates the Hindu-Javanese kingdoms and weaves double-ikat cloth.
- ◦The USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben, a shore dive or snorkel from the beach in the northeast.
- ◦Munduk's waterfalls and clove forests in the highlands, with the twin lakes below and few visitors.

Local transport
- Airport to city
- Taxi/app ride, 30–60 min, ~€10; scooter culture
- Car needed?
- Recommended for most of what is worth seeing
- Getting around
- Traffic is the main constraint; a driver for the day is the normal way to cover ground, and Gojek or Grab work for short hops. Scooters are everywhere but accidents are frequent. The airport is in the south, an hour or more to Ubud.
- Clock
- Same time as Singapore (Asia/Makassar) derived
- Daylight
- 11.8 hours of daylight in August · sunrise 06:29, sunset 18:19 derived

Good to know
Mount Agung's activity can close the airport at short notice, and unlicensed scooter riding voids most travel insurance; a tourist levy is payable on arrival.
