Why now

Prime time in November: 28°C days, dry, fares below average.

November to February is the only comfortable season for walking and the desert; summer is above forty degrees and life runs after dark. Riyadh Season, the winter entertainment programme, fills hotels and roads, and Ramadan and the Hajj weeks shift hours and flight prices.

Best months here: February, November, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Riyadh is a desert capital of eight million people, a freeway grid and a new confidence: opened to tourists only recently, it is still working out what to show them. The old walled town around Masmak fort and the mud-brick ruins of Diriyah are the historic core; the Kingdom Tower and the entertainment districts are the present. It suits people curious about a country in the middle of changing its mind, and drivers who do not mind distances.

What you can do

  1. 01Walk At-Turaif in Diriyah at dusk, the restored Saudi first capital, then eat in Bujairi Terrace.
  2. 02See the Masmak fort and the Al Zal souk in the old town, then the camel market on the edge of town.
  3. 03Go up the Kingdom Centre's Sky Bridge after dark for the grid of the city lit to the horizon.
  4. 04Spend a morning in the National Museum, which explains the peninsula from fossils to unification.
  5. 05Drive to the Edge of the World, the Tuwaiq escarpment, for the drop and the sunset.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Al OlayaThe Kingdom and Faisaliah towers, business hotels and malls; central, easy, built for cars.
Diriyah and Al BujairiThe historic district with new restaurants and boutique hotels; the most pleasant evenings in the city.
Al Batha and DeiraThe old town: Masmak, souks, South Asian eateries and cheap rooms; real, loud, unpolished.
Diplomatic QuarterGardens, embassies, walking paths and the Wadi Hanifah trails; calm, closed-feeling.

Stay in Al Olaya for convenience or Diriyah for the evenings; anywhere else means a taxi to everything. Ask about the metro station nearest your hotel, it changes the trip.

Unusual things

  • ◦Wadi Hanifah, a rehabilitated valley with paths, pools and picnic spots running through the western suburbs.
  • ◦The Ushaiger heritage village, a mud-brick town two hours northwest, restored without becoming a theme park.
  • ◦The Red Sand Dunes near Thumamah, half an hour out, where families take quads and picnics on winter evenings.

Day trips

Edge of the World4x4 with a guide, about 90 minutes to 2 hours — Cliff walks on the escarpment with the desert plain below; closed in high summer.
Ushaiger and ShaqraCar, about 2 hours — Najdi mud architecture, a small museum and tea with whoever is around.
Al UlaFlight, about 90 minutes; better as two nights — Hegra's Nabataean tombs and the sandstone canyons; not a day trip in any sense.

Good to know

Dress codes are relaxed but still conservative, alcohol is illegal, and photography of people and government buildings needs care; check your government's advice, which currently notes risks near the Yemen border and from regional tensions.
