New Orleans
You can be here in October for about €898, 3 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in October: 27°C days, fares below average.
The cooler months from about October to April are the season, with Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest filling the city and doubling hotel prices in general terms; the weeks between the big festivals are the sweet spot. Hurricane season runs June to November and summer heat empties the streets by afternoon.
Best months here: March, October, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

New Orleans is the least American city in America: Creole townhouses, brass bands on the corner, a food culture that runs from po'boys to Creole fine dining, and a rhythm that takes drinking on the street as normal. It suits people who come for music and food and stay up late; it is humid, poor in places, and it does not hide either.
What you can do
- 01Hear brass bands and jazz on Frenchmen Street after ten, rather than Bourbon Street's cover bands.
- 02Ride the St. Charles streetcar through the Garden District's mansions and get off for a walk under the oaks.
- 03Eat beignets at Café du Monde before eight, then gumbo, a fried oyster po'boy and a Sazerac later.
- 04Walk the French Quarter's back streets, Royal and Chartres, in the morning while Bourbon sleeps.
- 05Take a Second Line parade on a Sunday afternoon if one is running; the routes are posted weekly.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in the lower French Quarter or the Marigny for music, the Garden District for quiet and porches; a night on Bourbon Street itself is a mistake.
Unusual things
- ◦The Backstreet Cultural Museum in Tremé, Mardi Gras Indian suits and Second Line history in a small house.
- ◦Preservation Hall, an unamplified room in the Quarter with several short sets a night; queue early.
- ◦The Fair Grounds' Lakeview neighbourhood and Bayou St. John, where locals kayak and picnic under the oaks.
