Auckland
You can be here in March for about €1,538, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in March: 22°C days, sea 21°C.
The southern summer is the busy season for the whole country, with campervans and full hostels; late spring and early autumn are calmer, with mild weather and open roads. Winter closes some alpine routes but is fine in the north.
Best months here: February, March, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Auckland is a spread-out city on an isthmus between two harbours, with fifty extinct volcanoes for viewpoints and a Polynesian population larger than any Pacific island's. It is where New Zealand trips begin rather than the reason for them; give it two days, then leave for the country that makes people come.
What you can do
- 01Climb Maungawhau (Mount Eden) at sunrise for the crater and both harbours.
- 02Take the ferry to Waiheke Island for a vineyard lunch and a swim at Onetangi.
- 03Walk the west coast at Piha, black sand and surf, forty minutes from the centre.
- 04See the Māori and Pacific galleries of the Auckland War Memorial Museum in the Domain.
- 05Eat at Ponsonby Central in the evening, or dumplings and Korean fried chicken on Dominion Road.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Ponsonby or the city centre for a first visit; for the rest of the country, a car or campervan and a loop through Rotorua, Wellington and the South Island is the standard plan.
Unusual things
- ◦Rangitoto Island, a 600-year-old volcano in the harbour, reached by ferry and climbed in an hour on lava trails.
- ◦The Ōtara Market on Saturday mornings in South Auckland, the city's Pacific food and craft market.
- ◦The Waitākere Ranges' Kitekite Falls track near Piha, rainforest and a swimming hole, check trail closures for kauri dieback.

Good to know
New Zealand's sun is unusually strong, so cover up even on cool days; the west coast beaches have dangerous rips, and you should swim only where patrolled.
