Reykjavík
You can be here in October for about €1,314, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Off season in October: 6°C days, 19 rainy days, fares below average.
Summer brings round-the-clock daylight, puffins, open highland roads and the fullest hotels. Autumn and late winter trade daylight for auroras, quieter roads and a music festival that fills the town; midwinter days are five hours long and the countryside can shut with a single storm.
Best months here: January, March, December. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Reykjavík is a town of 140,000 that behaves like a capital: a corrugated-iron old centre, a concert hall on the harbour, a music scene out of proportion to its size, and geothermal pools where the actual social life happens. It is small enough to know in two days and expensive enough that most visitors treat it as a base for the countryside. It suits people who like weather, swimming outdoors in the rain, and a bar that turns into a gig by midnight.
What you can do
- 01Swim at Vesturbæjarlaug or the 1937 Sundhöllin first thing; the hot pots are where the city talks.
- 02Take the lift up Hallgrímskirkja's tower for the grid of coloured roofs, then walk Skólavörðustígur down to Laugavegur.
- 03See the Settlement Exhibition's excavated Viking-age longhouse under Aðalstræti, then the National Museum for the rest of the story.
- 04Walk the shore path from the Sun Voyager past Harpa to Grandi, and eat fish at Grandi Mathöll.
- 05Eat a pylsa with everything at Bæjarins Beztu, lamb soup somewhere warm, and skip the fermented shark unless you enjoy ammonia.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in 101 for a first visit, a few streets off Laugavegur if you want to sleep: the bars run until five at weekends. Hotels out by the Kringlan mall or in Laugardalur are cheaper but mean a bus.
Unusual things
- ◦Viðey island, ten minutes by ferry: Richard Serra's basalt columns, the country's oldest stone house and Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower.
- ◦Nauthólsvík, a made geothermal beach on the south shore where hot water is piped into a sea lagoon; the swimmers go year-round.
- ◦Öskjuhlíð, the wooded hill under the Perlan dome, with wartime British bunkers and gun positions left among the pines.
