Why now

Prime time in October: 24°C days, dry, sea 25°C, fares below average.

May, June and September to October give open ruins and cycle paths without the July heat, with the sea warm from June onwards; in August the meltemi blows on the north coast and the resorts run at capacity. From November most of the island closes, and Kos Town becomes a small harbour town again.

Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

Kos is a flat, bicycle-friendly Dodecanese island with the Asklepieion of Hippocrates, a Knights' castle at the harbour and a town rebuilt in Italian style after the 1933 earthquake; the resorts at Kardamena and Tigaki pay the bills. It suits families and cyclists who want beaches, easy transport and a bit of antiquity, and it is honest about being a package island.

What you can do

  1. 01Cycle the seafront path from Kos Town to Tigaki or Psalidi, flat all the way.
  2. 02Visit the Asklepieion on its terraces above town, then the Roman odeon and Casa Romana back in the centre.
  3. 03Sit under Hippocrates' plane tree by the Knights' castle, then walk the Ottoman lanes behind it.
  4. 04Take the boat to Nisyros for the volcano crater and the village of Mandraki.
  5. 05Drive to Zia in the hills for the sunset view, then eat in a taverna at Asfendiou rather than on the terrace.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Kos TownThe harbour, castle and ruins with cafés and cycle paths; central, walkable, busy but not a resort.
Tigaki and MarmariLong sandy north-coast beaches with windsurfing; quiet, family-oriented, 10 km from town by bus.
KardamenaThe south-coast resort with bars and the airport close by; loud in summer, boats to Nisyros.
Kefalos and the south-westVillage on a hill above Kamari bay with quieter beaches; the far end, a car needed.

A first visit should stay in Kos Town for the bicycle paths and evenings; Tigaki suits families wanting sand, Kardamena suits nights out and nothing else.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Neratzia castle and the Ottoman Defterdar mosque in the main square, a town built by three empires.
  • ◦The salt lake at Alikes near Tigaki, with flamingos in winter and spring.
