Why now

Shoulder season in October: 12°C days, 16 rainy days, fares below average.

The archipelago and the seafood restaurants on the coast run to a summer rhythm, with many places outside the city closing after the school holidays. Late spring and early autumn keep the boats running with fewer people on them; in high summer the islands' guest harbours fill with yachts.

Best months here: May, June, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Gothenburg is a port city that has turned its shipyards into a waterfront and kept its trams, its fish market and a certain working directness. It suits people who found Stockholm too polished, and it is the gateway to the west coast archipelago, where car-free islands sit half an hour from the tram terminus.

What you can do

  1. 01Take tram 11 to Saltholmen and a ferry to Vrångö or Styrsö in the southern archipelago for a swim off the rocks.
  2. 02Eat shrimp sandwiches or a fish soup at Feskekôrka, the reopened fish market hall on the canal.
  3. 03Walk Haga's wooden houses, then climb Skansen Kronan for the view over the roofs.
  4. 04See the Gothenburg Museum of Art on Götaplatsen for the Nordic collection, Zorn and Munch included.
  5. 05Spend an evening at Liseberg, the amusement park that is as much a city institution as a ride.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

Inom VallgravenThe old town inside the moat, with the canals, Nordstan mall and most hotels; central but a little dull at night.
Haga and LinnéWooden houses, cafés and Linnégatan's bars; the best mix of atmosphere and walking distance.
MajornaOld working-class district on the tram line west, now cafés and second-hand shops; cheaper rooms, real neighbourhood feel.
Marstrand and the Bohuslän coastNot a district but where the coast trip goes: the fortress island an hour north, then Smögen, Fjällbacka and the granite.

Stay around Haga, Linné or the Avenyn end of the centre; anything inside the moat is walkable to the station. The Gothia Towers by Liseberg is convenient but characterless.

Unusual things

  • ◦Röda Sten Konsthall, a boiler house under the Älvsborg bridge turned contemporary art space.
  • ◦The Volvo Museum at Arendal, a long way out at the harbour but the story of the city's other industry.
  • ◦Slottsskogen park's Natural History Museum, with the Malm whale, a stuffed blue whale you could once sit inside.

Day trips

MarstrandBus from Nils Ericson terminal, about 1 hour, then a two-minute ferry — Carlsten fortress, a car-free island of wooden houses and a coastal path round it.
Southern archipelagoTram 11 to Saltholmen, then ferry 20 to 45 minutes — Vrångö for beaches and nature reserve, Styrsö for the village; covered by the city transport ticket.
Smögen and FjällbackaCar, about 1.5 to 2 hours north — Bohuslän's pink granite coast, boardwalk harbours and the shrimp boats; overnight is better.
