Ragusa
You can be here in September for about €657, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Prime time in September: 27°C days.
Easter processions and the summer feast days fill the towns and empty the beaches of parking; the harvest-season shoulder months are warm enough to swim and cool enough to walk the stairs of Ragusa. Winter is quiet, green and often closed on weekday afternoons.
Best months here: June, September, October. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

The Val di Noto is the south-eastern corner of Sicily rebuilt in baroque after the 1693 earthquake: Ragusa Ibla on its rock, Modica in its gorge, Noto on a golden grid, Scicli under its cliffs. Comiso airport drops you among them, in farming country with dry-stone walls and carob trees running down to a sandy coast. It suits people who prefer small towns, churches and chocolate to anything active.
What you can do
- 01Walk down the stairs from Ragusa Superiore into Ibla, then sit in the Giardino Ibleo at the end of the town.
- 02Eat Modica's cold-worked chocolate at the Antica Dolceria Bonajuto, then climb to San Giorgio's 250 steps.
- 03Walk Noto's Corso Vittorio Emanuele in the late light, when the limestone turns the colour it is famous for.
- 04Swim at Marina di Ragusa or Sampieri, with the ruined Fornace Penna brickworks standing on the sand.
- 05Eat scacce, folded stuffed bread, and ravioli di ricotta with pork sauce at a trattoria in Scicli or Chiaramonte.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Ragusa Ibla or Modica for a first visit and take a car; the seaside towns are for July and August only. Comiso itself is a pleasant working town, not a base.
Unusual things
- ◦Cava d'Ispica, a gorge of rock-cut tombs, churches and cave dwellings between Modica and Ispica.
- ◦The Castello di Donnafugata, a 19th-century pile with a stone labyrinth in its garden, reachable by train.
- ◦Punta Secca, the fishing hamlet with the lighthouse and Montalbano's house on the beach.
