Why now

Prime time in December: 22°C days, dry.

The dry months after the big rains are the time to travel, when the highland roads are open and the countryside is green; the main rainy season makes Addis grey and the north difficult. Ethiopian religious festivals draw enormous crowds to Lalibela and Gondar and fill flights well in advance.

Best months here: January, February, November. December is not one of them — the label above measures the month against a fixed bar, not against the rest of the year here. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".

The place

Addis Ababa sits at 2,300 metres, a sprawling, half-built capital with a coffee ceremony on every corner and a diplomatic quarter next to tin-roofed compounds. It is less a sightseeing city than the gateway to the north and the Omo Valley, and it suits travellers who can handle altitude, thin pavements and a slower pace of getting anything done.

What you can do

  1. 01See Lucy's 3.2-million-year-old skeleton at the National Museum, then walk up to the Entoto hills.
  2. 02Eat injera with a mixed beyaynetu at lunch, then doro wat in the evening.
  3. 03Sit through a full coffee ceremony, three rounds, somewhere in Piassa.
  4. 04Ride the light rail end to end for a cross-section of the city.
  5. 05Hear azmari singers at a late bar in Kazanchis, where improvised insults are part of the show.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods

BoleNear the airport, where most hotels, restaurants and the expat scene are; practical, not charming.
PiassaThe old Italian-era centre with the cathedral, jewellery shops and Taitu Hotel; atmospheric, a bit rough.
KazanchisGovernment and UN quarter with cultural restaurants and a few large hotels; central for everything.
Old Airport and Bisrate GabrielLeafy, residential, guesthouses in compounds; calm and green, taxis needed.

Bole for airport convenience and dining, Kazanchis for a more central feel; anywhere else means long taxi rides in unpredictable traffic.

Unusual things

  • ◦The Red Terror Martyrs' Memorial Museum on Meskel Square, small and unflinching on the Derg years.
  • ◦Fendika cultural centre in Kazanchis, a courtyard bar with traditional music and painting exhibitions.
  • ◦Merkato, one of the largest open-air markets in Africa; go with a local guide and empty pockets.

Day trips

Wenchi crater lakeCar, about 3 hours west — Horses down to the lake, a boat to the island monastery, hot springs; a long day.
LalibelaFlight, about 1 hour, minimum one night — The rock-hewn churches; not a day trip in practice but the reason most people come.

Getting around
Ride-hailing apps like Ride and Feres work well; blue-and-white taxis need bargaining. The light rail is cheap and crowded. Bole airport is fifteen minutes from the Bole hotels, and Ethiopian Airlines ties the country together.

Good to know

Several regions of Ethiopia, including parts of Amhara, Oromia and Tigray, carry government travel advisories that change frequently; check before booking domestic legs and allow a day to adjust to the altitude.
