Zadar
You can be here in December for about €561, 4 days, direct.
Why now
Shoulder season in December: 13°C days, sea 15°C.
May, June and September give open ferries while the peninsula stays walkable, and a sea warm from June; in August the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun are shoulder to shoulder at sunset. Winter is quiet and windy, with the bora shutting down boats.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Zadar is a Roman-and-Venetian town on a narrow peninsula that was bombed flat in 1943 and rebuilt without fuss, so Roman columns stand beside socialist-era blocks and a modern seafront organ. It suits people who want an old town without Dubrovnik's crowds and a base for the northern islands and the Velebit mountains.
What you can do
- 01Sit on the Sea Organ steps at dusk, then walk the Riva as the Greeting to the Sun lights up.
- 02See the Roman forum and St Donatus, the round 9th-century church, then climb the bell tower next door.
- 03Buy a bag of figs and cheese at the market by the Land Gate on any morning.
- 04Take the boat to Ugljan or Dugi Otok for Sakarun beach and Telašćica cliffs.
- 05Drink Maraschino in the town where Luxardo started making it, ideally at the end of a seafood dinner.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
A first visit should stay on the peninsula, ideally away from the Varoš bars; Borik and the coastal villages suit anyone driving or travelling with children.
Unusual things
- ◦The Museum of Ancient Glass in the Cosmacendi palace, with Roman glassware found in local graves and a working furnace.
- ◦Nin's Church of the Holy Cross, an early medieval chapel the size of a room, and the salt works next to it.
- ◦The Pag Island bridge road to Novalja's lace-making Pag town and its sheep's cheese, an hour's drive north.
