Why now
Prime time in June: 24°C days.
Summer is when the Voyage à Nantes art trail opens its temporary installations and the Machines de l'Île run their full programme; spring and autumn are quieter and the green line on the pavement still leads round the permanent pieces. The Atlantic beaches are within reach only when the weather holds.
Best months here: June, July, September. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Nantes is a former shipbuilding and slave-trade port that has turned itself into a city of public art, bicycles and mechanical elephants without becoming precious about it. The Loire still runs through it, the ducal castle sits in the centre and the old island shipyards are now a park. It suits people who like cities that are working things out, two hours from Paris and forty minutes from the Atlantic.

Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Graslin or the Bouffay for a first visit; the Île de Nantes is interesting but spread out and quiet at night.
