Kathmandu
You can be here in November for about €889, 3 days, 1 stop.
Why now
Prime time in November: 21°C days, fares below average.
The post-monsoon months have the clearest skies and the busiest trails; spring is warmer and hazier, with rhododendrons on the hills. The big autumn festivals, Dashain and Tihar, close shops and empty the city for days, which is either the point of the trip or a problem for it.
Best months here: February, April, November. Daytime highs, sea temperature and rainy days from three years of Open-Meteo reanalysis; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain, which is the WMO threshold and not the same as "it drizzled".
The place

Kathmandu is a valley of three old Newar cities that have grown into one dusty, horn-heavy sprawl, with brick temple squares, Tibetan stupas and cremation ghats still working inside it. The mountains are not visible from the streets most days; they are a flight or a long bus ride away. It suits people who can take noise and dust in exchange for a place where the ritual life is real, and who plan to walk somewhere high.
What you can do
- 01Walk the kora around Boudhanath at dusk with the pilgrims, then eat momos in a Tibetan café behind the stupa.
- 02Cross the Bagmati to Patan for its Durbar Square and the Patan Museum, well labelled and housed in a restored palace.
- 03Climb the eastern steps to Swayambhunath early, before the heat and the monkeys get bold.
- 04Eat a Newari khaja set in Kirtipur or Patan: beaten rice, choila, bara, and a glass of homemade rice beer.
- 05Walk in the mountains: Langtang is the closest serious trek; Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna routes need two weeks.
Where to stay · neighbourhoods
Stay in Patan or Boudha for a quieter, older valley, and use Thamel only for the nights around a trek; bring earplugs wherever you sleep, the dogs bark all night.
Unusual things
- ◦Kirtipur, a Newar hill town on the valley's southwest edge, with temples, hand-loom weavers and a view back over the city, largely untouristed.
- ◦The Taragaon Museum in the grounds of the Hyatt at Boudha, on the architects and photographers who documented the valley in the 1960s and 70s.
- ◦Bungamati and Khokana, twin farming villages south of Patan known for woodcarving and mustard-oil pressing, rebuilt since the 2015 earthquake.

- No — walkable or good public transport
- Getting around
- Taxis are cheap and unmetered, so agree the fare first or use the Pathao and inDrive apps; the airport is 20 to 30 minutes from Thamel. Mountain flights leave early and are cancelled by cloud, and in peak seasons Lukla flights often depart from Ramechhap, a four-hour drive away.

Good to know
Altitude is the real hazard on treks, so ascend slowly above 3,000 metres; solo trekking in national parks is now officially restricted, so check the current rule on licensed guides before you go.
